We were getting ready to go for the day. All the children were packing up and one little friend who did not have a back pack had a stack of papers to take home. Without thinking I grabbed my stapler and asked him to come over to my desk and bring his papers. He looked at me and with all the trust in the world he asks,

”Is this going to hurt?”

Walking down the hall

To a 4 year old you can compare walking in a line down the hall to bungy jumping. It is one of the hardest tasks they learn in the first month of school and some are just not mature enough to get it before the end of pre-k.

It was a long difficult day, the children were tired, and the teachers were exhausted but we made it through the day. Now for the walk down the hall to go meet our parents. Children everywhere being dismissed,

“follow the silver line, stay behind the person in front of you”. That was what you would hear while walking down the hall, all the teachers saying basically the same thing.

All easy enough for us to understand but for a child that doesn’t know what the heck we mean when we say silver line or what does “behind” mean. The only time some have heard the word was

“I am going to spank your behind” so this was a toughy.

My little friend needed a little coaching, so I offered my hand to the little one who was having problems with that “behind” word. He didn’t take kindly to me wanting to hold his hand either.

“Please hold my hand,” I said to him, ” I don’t want to get lost”. He held it but he wasn’t happy at all.

You know how you say something sometimes and it goes out to the universe and comes back at you? The next day, I was walking along side of the line and a child reached out and took my hand. I was puzzled at first, wondering why, and almost pulled away because I didn’t want that to become a habit, and she says to me

” I don’t want you to get lost”.

What did I learn from this, I learned that these children are like little sponges for one thing, and I learned that offering my hand to someone makes someone want to offer their hand to me.

But I wanted to go to “Real” school

Every year we have a couple of children who are far beyond pre-k and probably would do well even in first grade. That is the case of this little boy. One of the main things we have to teach the very first day is sit and listen to instructions. We have to do this for our children’s safety and so we can manage our classroom. My new little friend was so anxious to come to school, so ready to learn to read.

Come to the carpet, come to the carpet, and sit on the floor. Our come to the carpet song, the first song they learn, this means we all come sit on the floor together and listen to the teacher.

”I don’t want to do that, I want to learn something, I wanted to go to “real” school this is play school”

This one is going to test our patience as teachers but he will do fine and we will challenge him and by the end of the year he will learn what he needs to know to do well in Kindergarten. It won’t be his numbers that he learns or his letters, or his colors, because I am pretty sure he knows all that right now, he will learn how to sit and listen to the teacher.

Even as grown ups, sometimes we think we know it all already and just refuse to sit and listen to the teacher.

First day of Pre-K for a four year old

“What is your name ? “I asked her, with her dark curls and big brown eyes looking back at me, she tells me her name.

”I am so glad to see you today, we are going to have so much fun in pre-k.”

There was so much going on in the room, children being accounted for, little bears being put in place. The little brown eyed girl with the dark curls comes to me and says,

“I can’t take this anymore, I need to go home”.

I told her I understand and told her I would really like her to stay and keep me company. After giving her a little hug, she now comes to me for that little bit or reasurance. I think sometimes we just need someone to say to us, “i really want you to keep me company” then give us a little hug.

Heavenly Customer Service

How many of you have ever done this…I know my mother friends have…cause thats what mothers do.

I do much of my praying just like most of my singing…in the car. I do the singing in the car because I can’t carry a tune for nothing.and no one has to listen to me being all pitchy. I do my praying in the car because because I can talk out loud, cry without being seen, and listen because I know its just me and God…..oh yeah, and the stupid driver following too close. I am sure thats the devil trying to keep me distracted.

I found myself telling our Father exactly how to fix what was wrong. I had it all figured out. Do this then do that and this will happen and then that will happen and then I will feel like this and they will feel like that and I had to just laugh out loud. Who the hell do I think I am telling God of all people how to fix it? He had to be laughing more than me. My favorite sermon to people is God has the best plan in His perfect timing, yet I can’t seem to practice what I preach for squat.

Yes, thats what I found myself doing, telling God how to fix it and when I wanted it.

I had to share this with you all so I put it in this bulletin. I guess God is speaking to me and telling me in His customer service voice, “Paulette, tell your friends, I am here, and I love you, thank you for calling, I will always be here for you and I have already taken care of your problem.
